2022 Pemi Staff

We are just a few short days away from the start of Pemis 115th summer! The staff has been hard at work getting ready for the campers’ arrival on June 25th, and the energy at camp is palpable. At the time of this writing, crews are off at Senior Beach putting in lane lines, at the batting cage hanging up the netting, in the Nature Lodge assembling displays, in the Junior Lodge organizing music equipment, and up at the Mess Hall arranging tables. Pemi’s staff works tirelessly during the course of our clinic and preseason weeks to ensure that boys can hit the ground running when they arrive on Saturday.

As you prepare for your own journeys to Lower Baker this weekend (or, for our alumni, as you dream wistfully of returning), we want to take the time to introduce you to this amazing group of staff members. It is a truly remarkable assembly of individuals, with myriad talents, backgrounds, and experiences. This summer’s staff hails from nine different nations and 21 states, and includes highly skilled athletes, musicians, artists, teachers and so much more. While all of our staff members bring their own unique talents, personalities, and passions to Pemi, they are united by their shared desire to contribute to building a welcoming, caring, and fun environment for all this summer! This newsletter introduces you to our directors, cabin staff, trip counselors, program staff, and nurses. You’ll meet the rest of the team in a subsequent post. Please read on to learn all about this stellar crew!

Directors

Kenny Moore – Director – The 2022 summer marks my 30th summer at Pemi and my 9th year of working for Pemi year-round. I love sharing the joy of Pemi with staff, alumni, parents and boys and can’t wait to have new and returning campers for the summer. During the non-summer months, my wife Sarah, son Winston, daughter Sally, and dog Burger, live in Cleveland, OH.

Charlie Malcolm – Assistant Director – I have been teaching history and coaching soccer for thirty-two years in independent schools. For the last twenty-two years I have been teaching at the Northfield Mount Hermon School. My first summer at Pemi was in 1976, and I spent three summers as a camper. My father attended Pemi in the late 1930s and early 1940s, Tom Reed Sr. was his counselor in Senior II. After three years as a camper, I returned to Pemi to work in maintenance before becoming a counselor in 1987. Since 1990 I have been the Camp’s Athletic Director until recently named Assistant Director in 2021. This year I will be a utility player, supporting the program, the kitchen, grounds and maintenance, and trips.

Pat Clare – Assistant Director – 2022 will be my second summer as assistant director and my 13th summer at Pemi overall. I’m coming off of my first off-season working year-round for Pemi. That has been an amazing experience in its own right, but if anything it has left me more excited than ever for another summer at Pemi! I can’t wait for Pemi to fill up with staff and campers for our 115th summer! A New Yorker born and raised, I now reside in Boston when not at Pemi. I’ll be joined at camp by my dog, Kemba, for his second Pemi summer!

This summer I’m looking forward to being outdoors, especially playing and coaching soccer.

In the fall I will continue with part time classes at NYU and continue working for the church-wide offices of the Episcopal Church in the department of Reconciliation, Justice, and Creation Care. In addition to my studies and work, I would consider myself an amateur naturalist who specializes in birds, butterflies, and botany. This summer will be my 14th at Pemi, and you will most likely find me either in the Nature Lodge or down in Junior Camp!

Junior 3: Ted Applebaum – Assistant Counselor (AC) – I’m Ted; I’m from Cleveland, Ohio, and I’m super excited to be back at Pemi this summer after spending two summers at home. I was a camper for 7 years, so I dabbled in pretty much everything Pemi has to offer (though I was never very good at most of the stuff I tried). I loved pretty much every single trip I went on, from day hikes to Allagash, and I really enjoyed some of the nature occupations. I’m hoping to pass on some camp knowledge and some Pemi spirit to future generations as an AC this year before going to study aerospace engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder this fall.

Hailing from Virginia, the escape north each year is something I treasure and have missed so much in the past few years. I am so excited to jump back into my old routines and explore all my old favorite activities. Pemi offered me so many unique experiences in the Nature Lodge, on Lower Baker, and with friends so I hope to re-cultivate those old endeavors and connections this summer.

Upper 2: George Fauver – CC – Hi my name is George Fauver. I was a Pemi camper for 5 years, and this is my first year as a counselor. Legends like Rob have connected families and friends to Lower Baker’s timeless space for 115 years now. Soccer, baseball, tennis and swimming at Pemi have always been my favorite activities, and I continue to enjoy these sports in a different light today. This will be my first summer at Pemi, and I’m wicked excited to get the chance to be in charge of the art department this summer. I love all different forms of art. Deb Kure – Nature Program Director – Studying Geology at the University of Rochester sparked my love of field trips, and of learning and teaching outside! I’ve led outdoor science programs since then, through camps, museums, and trips programs throughout the U.S. Working in urban, rural, and wilderness settings, in 25 different program types, for 15 institutions, in a wide range of ecosystems, has built my perspective on the value of shared transformational experiences in the outdoors, for all ages! My husband Brian and I live in Austin, TX. During the school year I bring earth science and space science outreach programs into elementary and middle schools all over the eastern half of Texas! I’m thankful to be in my 15th summer with Pemi, now as Nature Program Director.

I was a Pemi trip counselor in the late 1980s and early ’90s, and returned to the shores of Lower Baker in 2021 after my retirement from a career teaching Science at Sheldon High School in Eugene, Oregon. While I very much enjoyed teaching in the Nature program last year, I’m excited to return in 2022 as the Head of the Trips Program.
