2025 Pemi Staff

Hello and welcome to the first newsletter of the 2025 Pemi season – our 118th summer! In just a matter of hours, boys and families will begin flooding into camp, having traveled from 24 states and 10 different countries to create our 2025 camp community. It’s a day that so many of us – directors, counselors, staff, parents, and, most of all, the boys themselves – have been eagerly awaiting for months. We know that Pemi 2025 will bring so many magical moments as the campers forge lifelong friendships, explore activities old and new, build their independence and confidence, and live every day with our 2025 theme in mind: JOY!

To prepare for the campers’ arrival, the Pemi staff has been hard at work over the last two weeks, completing clinics and certifications in lifeguarding and wilderness first aid; participating in training sessions on counseling skills, camper management, and teaching; and building camaraderie through hikes, campfire, and the physical work of setting up camp. It’s a stellar crew of campers and staff assembled here on the shores of Lower Baker Pond, ranging from brand new assistant counselors to 56-year staff veterans. Of the 39 cabin staff, 34 are Pemi veterans and our five new guys all found Pemi via current counselors or campers. It’s a dedicated, energetic, and talented group that will work tirelessly to ensure that every camper has the summer of a lifetime!

With that in mind, I’m thrilled to share this initial round of staff bios: our director team, counselors, program staff, and Health Center team. Everyone seen here, along with all of our kitchen, buildings and grounds, and remaining administrative staff (who you’ll meet in a later post) can’t wait to welcome in our campers tomorrow. Pemi 2025 is here!

Directors

Director – Kenny Moore – This summer will be my 33rd summer at Pemi! I love camp life and look forward to welcoming our largest group of new campers and their families to the community this summer! This summer I am looking forward to joining camper activities like swimming in Lower Baker Pond, shooting hoops on the basketball courts & joining a day hike, as well as communicating with parents and coordinating with the staff. During the non-summer months, my wife Sarah, son Winston, daughter Sally, and dog Burger, live in Avon Lake, Ohio just west of Cleveland.

Pat Clare, Assistant Director of Camp Pemi

Assistant Director – Pat Clare – 2025will be my fifth summer as assistant director, and my 16th summer at Pemi overall. I’m thrilled to welcome our amazing community of campers, staff, families, and alumni back to Pemi throughout the summer. I work year-round for Pemi, so the summer months are a wonderful culmination of all the planning and preparation through fall, winter, and spring. Nothing beats the excitement of having us all together again. During the off-season I live in Boston. I’m joined at camp by my wife, Shannon, and my dog, Kemba, who’s excited for his fifth Pemi summer!

Assistant Director – Johanna Zabawa – I am a veteran staff member and great-granddaughter of one of Pemi’s founders, Edgar Fauver. During the fall, winter, and spring, I’m Pemi’s Lead Administrator and Registrar. During the summer, I am a member of Pemi’s senior leadership team with a primary focus on camper and staff health and wellness. In 2004, I participated in Pemi West, and the following year joined the Pemi staff. I led trips for a number of years, coached baseball, and in 2011, served as the first female Head of Staff at Pemi. I graduated from the University of Minnesota’s School of Social Work in 2013 and am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). For the past ten years, I have been practicing clinical social work in a variety of therapeutic and community settings. Since 2017, I have been providing outpatient mental health therapy to adolescents at a public high school in Minneapolis, MN. I live in St. Paul, MN with my husband Nick and daughters Charlotte (5), and Holly (3).

Charlie Malcolm Camp Pemi Assistant Director

Assistant Director – Charlie Malcolm – I have been teaching history and coaching soccer for thirty-five years in independent schools. For the last twenty-five years I have been teaching at the Northfield Mount Hermon School. My first summer at Pemi was in 1976, and I spent three summers as a camper. My father attended Pemi in the late 1930s and early 1940s; Tom Reed Sr. was his counselor in Senior II. After three years as a camper, I returned to Pemi to work in maintenance before becoming a counselor in 1987. Since 1990 I have been the Camp’s Athletic Director until recently being named Assistant Director in 2021. This year I will be a utility player, coaching a lot of soccer and baseball while supporting the program, the kitchen, grounds and maintenance, and trips. This will be my 41st summer at Pemi.

When I’m not hanging out in Junior Camp, I spend most of my time in the Nature Lodge teaching astronomy and Weird Science or coaching swimming at the waterfront. This summer I’m pumped to bring back model rocketry and 4th Hour “The Way Pemi Works” to learn about what keeps camp running and our environmental impact. Over my five years as a camper here at Pemi, I count myself extremely lucky with the counselors I have been paired with. Each year, they offered something different; however, their generosity and genuine excitement to be here at camp with the kids have always been something I admired and appreciated. In turn, I hope to emulate the incredible experience I had as a camper to kids across Pemi. I’ve spent the majority of my time at Pemi on the Intermediate Hill, and I’m thrilled to be there again this summer. The Hill is definitely the center of camp and being in a leadership position there is an amazing opportunity. Being a Division Head is something I’ve been looking forward to for years. Senior 2 – Sam Maynes (CC) – I am beyond excited to be back at Camp Pemi after a brief hiatus. Since camp ended in 2023, I have lived in Washington, DC where last month I graduated from the School of International Service at American University with an MA in International Affairs. I thought summer 2023 would be my last dance at Pemi, but now I have the chance to return to Lower Baker for my fourth year on staff. At Pemi I spend most of my time on the baseball diamonds, and I can’t wait to see how the ballplayers have developed since I last coached them two summers ago. Remembering the guys who were 11s and 13s in 2023 who will now be the 13s and 15s has me fired up for a great summer of Pemi baseball. I’m also excited to get up into the White Mountains for overnight trips and to feel the Pemi spirit around the campfire and in the Mess Hall.

I love House music (EDM) & occasionally DJ vinyl sets at events, including Pemi in 2023. ‘Cheeky Little Mixes’ may return to the Mess Hall porch for 2025!! A change of residence this year places me potentially closer to Moose’s archery range than my own, so I’ll be cycling lots this summer – lots!

Pemi has given me so much joy for so many years; I hope to give a little back and help make Pemi 2025 amazing.

I will be teaching all things sport-fishing this summer from rod-building to fly-tying. Watching kids catch fish is fun, but seeing them begin to develop a passion for it is kind of what I live for.

Program Staff – Zach Leeds – I am excited to be back at Pemi after a couple of summers away. This past year, I started working at Cardigan Mountain School in Canaan, NH as a teaching intern and three-season coach in soccer, alpine skiing, and tennis. I am excited to help the athletics staff at Pemi this summer.

Trip Counselor – Ellie Madigan – This is my second summer at Pemi, and I can’t wait to be back! I’m from Warner, NH and graduated from the University of Rhode Island last May. I have been working in outdoor education since and spent my winter working and skiing in Colorado. I am passionate about getting youth engaged and excited about nature, so I am thrilled to be returning as a trip counselor this summer. When not on trail you can find me in the Nature Lodge and helping out around camp!

Office Staff – Madelyn Marchese – Hi, I’m Madelyn! I’m from New Orleans and I’m currently pursuing my master’s in mental health in children at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. I spent two years teaching at a middle school in Florida, and I have a passion for reading, pilates, and going to Disney World. After visiting Pemi the past two summers, I’m so excited to officially join the team and work in the front office. I can’t wait to meet everyone and be part of the Pemi team!

Head of Sailing & Head of Assistant Counselors – Henry McLeod – Hi! I’m Henry McLeod, I come from Windsor, UK, and I’m looking forward to returning to Pemi for my fourth summer. I’m going to be helping out on the waterfront and helping the assistant counsellors adapt to their new roles on staff. I’m looking forward to Mess Hall singing, camp fires, and catching up with everyone after 10 months away!

Head of Art – Deb Pannell – I’m thrilled to return to Pemi for the 2025 season! I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I love hiking local trails, experimenting with new recipes, and creating art through painting and collage. During the school year, I teach middle-school humanities at Mark Day School in San Rafael, California. I’ve had the joy of teaching grades K-7 and love helping students grow, explore, and connect. I’m excited for another summer of fun, creativity, and community at Pemi!

Head of Waterskiing – Art Ray – Art Ray from California. Was a firefighter for a LONG time! Love the outdoors and especially boating and waterskiing. Looking forward to teaching anyone that wants to try to ski.

Head of Trips – Dan Reed – After a few summers away at grad school, I’m thrilled to be returning full-time to Pemi to run the Trips program with our stellar crew of trip counselors. During the year, I teach English and serve as Upper School Assistant Principal at Newark Academy in Livingston, NJ. In my many years at Pemi, I’ve filled several roles in and out of the cabin, most recently as Director of Family Camp.

Pemi West Trip Leader – Alice Riley – Hi, I’m Alice and this is my FIFTH summer at Pemi! As a New Hampshire native, I worked as a trip counselor prior to becoming part of the 16s programs staff. I graduated from Kenyon College in 2023 and have since been working as a History teacher and Cross Country/Track coach in Connecticut. I am so excited for the adventure out West this summer!

Program Staff – Josh Scarponi – My name is Josh “Scarp” Scarponi, and I’m looking forward to my seventh summer at Pemi! I will be returning as the official director of the 2nd annual Pemi Olympics during the first week, and returning later in the summer for some much needed time at Lower Baker Pond.

Head of Canoeing – Helena Singleton – Hi! I’m Helena from Nottingham, UK. I’m so excited to be back for my second summer at Pemi! I’m going to be leading canoeing activities and helping out on the waterfront. I’m looking forward to free swim, Bean Soup, and camp fires!

Program Staff – Megan Spindler – My name is Megan Spindler and this will be my third summer at Pemi! I am from New Hampshire, and I am a recent graduate from Connecticut College where I studied botany and music. This summer I will be teaching in the nature program, the music program, and coaching ultimate frisbee as well. Some of my favorite things to do in my free time are reading, writing poetry, composing music, and singing. I am so excited for another wonderful summer at Pemi!

Camp Photographer & Office Staff – Kala Woods – Hi! My name is Mikala Woods, and this is going to be my first year at Camp Pemi as the photographer and office staff. I grew up in northern New Hampshire always being outside hiking, kayaking, biking, swimming, playing sports, and whatever sounded fun as long as we were in the sunshine!

Head of Program – Wendy Young – I joined Pemi in 2018. As Head of Program, I work with all of the program heads to create and oversee the weekly schedule for the campers and staff. A former UNH college athlete, I enjoy all sports as well as the summer camp life. During the school year, I serve as the Head Athletic Trainer at Northfield Mount Hermon School in Massachusetts.

Camp Photographer & Program Staff – Ludmila Zamah – I am from Kansas City and Toronto and live in Connecticut, where I have been teaching Arabic and French, supervising community service programs, and serving as an affiliate for a boys’ dorm at the Loomis Chaffee School for the past 11 years. I worked for 10 summers at Concordia Language Villages, including as French business manger and most recently the Arabic dean. In my spare time, I study classical Indian dancing, do yoga, and freelance in photography. I am excited to return to Camp Pemi as camp photographer and yoga instructor. For my third summer on staff, my twin boys (Saleem and Yaseen) will be campers for the first time, just days after returning from our epic four-month journey during my sabbatical in Morocco (Arabic and French immersion), Rwanda (teaching English), and Nigeria (reconnecting with family).
